Manchester is currently the biggest airport outside of the London region and in terms of Europe is regarded to be the twelfth busiest. With two runways it has the provisions to cope with transatlantic flights and as such, passengers are given the option to fly to destinations in the US, such as New York, Chicago and Dallas.

With the conjecture surrounding the Competition Commission’s criticism of BAA, and accusations of monopolistic tendencies it is likely that the MAG will benefit from any developments. Recent reports indicate that the Manchester Airport Group have put together a bid team to discuss the option of buying both Gatwick and Glasgow airports. While discussions are almost certain to include negotiations on price, it could be a beneficial move for the group. This may not be music to the ears of BAA however, it is likely they would have preferred to sell Stansted rather than Gatwick, but MAG chiefs are adamant that due to Gatwick’s likeness to Manchester in terms of operations, this is a more preferable purchase.

Naturally any buyout would be lucrative; the large number of income generated by Glasgow’s and Gatwick’s car hire services, shops and restaurants makes any deal extremely worthwhile. It is likely however that the finances needed would require MAG to partner with another company; those in the running are predominantly European groups such as Germany’s Hochtief, or Credit Suisse. With MAG being part owned by Manchester City Council, issues concerned with public funding of any buyout may also occur.

As with every airport in the UK, security has become a major issue at Manchester. As a result, executives have enacted high technology solutions to the problems of security. One of these solutions is the iris scanning of all staff members that enter the airside component of the terminals. It is hoped that this system will control the access of the thirty thousand staff to sensitive areas. The system is still in its induction period but executives are hopeful that it will limit if not totally diminish any instances of unauthorised access to aircraft and the airfield apron.

Today Manchester has evolved considerably from its humble beginnings. The group in ownership is wealthy enough to consider buyouts of other UK airports while security measures are some of the most advanced in the country. One thing is certain, the site will continue to develop in order to service the UK’s second city and beyond.

While travellers used to have to catch transatlantic flights from Manchester Airport, Jet2 are making it easier than ever for business travellers and tourists in Yorkshire to take a bite of the Big Apple.

Jet2, which is based in Leeds, has announced details of their plans to launch Leeds-Bradford Airport’s first ever transatlantic service. Richard Bodin, Managing Director of Jet2holidays.com, said that they were “proud and thrilled” to be launching the route to New York’s Newark Airport. He said: “This is an important announcement for us. We knew this destination was one that our customers have been calling for and we are proud and thrilled to be able to be the first holiday company in the region to offer this great deal to such an amazing city.”

Jet2 revealed that they would be offering the return flights to New York from just £579.98, which includes taxes. They also unveiled their plans to offer special Christmas shopping breaks in the Big Apple, which can be taken during November and December this year. Costing from just £699, these four-day breaks will include three nights in a hotel and travellers will be able to choose from a range of three, four and five-star properties. In addition to this, the fee also includes all taxes and charges.

Mr Bodin said that a Christmas shopping break was the ideal way to experience New York for the first time. He said: “We are launching with Christmas shopping breaks as our research suggested this was the one thing most people tend to recommend to friends as a must-do first experience, and something they tend to repeat.”

Manchester has always been known as an industrial city with its cotton mills and production of textiles. Over the last 10 years funding to improve and develop the city centre and outer districts has been poured into the city, including funds provided for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and these days the city has been completely redeveloped.

Manchester is a very attractive place to go for shopping opportunities, with The Printworks and The Triangle offering designer and unique boutiques. The Arndale Centre was the last part of the city to receive a facelift and now facilitates the UK’s largest shopping centre.

Manchester is easy to travel to as it has its own airport with regular train going in and out to the city centre. The city offers two train stations; Piccadilly is the main station and provides links to all the major routes around the UK. Manchester also has a tram system known as the Metrolink that can be used to get around the centre or reach nearby districts.

Manchester occupies a hallowed place in the history of England because of its key role in the Industrial Revolution. Today, it is also known as a centre of the arts, media, commerce and higher education. There are some who consider Manchester to be England’s second city, but Birmingham can also lay claim to that distinction.

At present, Manchester is being considered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for possible inclusion as a World Heritage Site. UNESCO has taken note of Manchester’s network of canals and mills, important contributors to the city’s development during the 19th century Industrial Revolution.

The history of Manchester can be traced back to Roman times when it was first settled. General Gnaeus Julius Agricola established a fort in old Manchester to serve as a trading and staging post between York and Chester. During the Dark Ages, troops abandoned the fort and the entire area went undeveloped for some time as settlement shifted to other areas, particularly near the Irwell and Irk rivers. Later on, manorial lord Thomas De La Warre, who was also a priest, gave the site to the church and in 1422, the fortified manor house was turned into the College of Priests, which is now Chetham’s School of Music. The Collegiate Church was constructed later on. It is actually today’s Manchester Cathedral.

In 1301, the city turned into a market town upon receiving its Charter. This was followed by a strong migration of Flemish settlers who further propelled the growth of Manchester through their thriving new cotton and textile industry. Manchester soon became the premiere industrial centre of Lancashire.

By the 19th century, Manchester was known as ‘Cottonopolis’ in honour of its primary produce and in recognition of its stature as the centre of the region’s prosperous cotton industry. Manchester made great strides in the area of infrastructure with the construction of the city’s world renowned canal system and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Shortly thereafter, Manchester evolved into the leading industrial centre in the world and its first industrial society.

The evolution of Manchester as an industrial society was fast and revolutionary as new industrial processes, new forms of labour organization and new ways of thinking originated from the city and captured the world’s attention. The ‘Manchester School’, which promoted free trade and laissez-faire, was emulated in other places. Entrepreneurs and industrialists from all over Europe trekked to Manchester to study the way they did things. “What Manchester does today, the rest of the world does tomorrow,” became a popular saying. It was also during this time that Manchester experienced a great surge in population with the immigration of Lancastarians, Jews and the Irish.

In the late 19th century, turmoil struck Manchester as the working and non-titled classes rebelled against the ruling class, culminating with the events known as ‘Peterloo’ on St. Peter’s Field on August 16, 1819. Manchester has since played a prominent role in the labour movement. It hosted the first Trade Union Congress in June 1868 and is recognized as the cradle of the Labour party and the Suffragette Movement.

The last quarter of the 19th century marked Manchester’s golden age. During this period, construction was completed on many of the city’s great architectural landmarks, including its town hall and the Manchester Ship Canal, which allowed foreign ships to sail straight to the Port of Manchester Docks. When the docks of the Port of Manchester closed in the seventies, there was massive unemployment in the area.

The establishment of Trafford Park in Stretford, the world’s first industrial estate, further stamped the city’s stature as an industrial powerhouse. However, its place in the world of industry took a hit with the depression that followed the war and with the development of new structures and processes that supplanted the old industries such as textile manufacturing, once the city’s bread and butter industry.

By World War II, Manchester had shifted to heavy industrial construction. It hosted the offices and production plant of Avro, the manufacturer of aircraft for the RAF, most notable of which was the popular Avro Lancaster bomber. The war saw many Luftwaffe attacks on Manchester, including the infamous 1941 Christmas Blitz, which resulted in massive damage throughout the city, including the historic Cathedral.

Manchester formally split from Lancashire county in 1974 with the creation of the Borough of Manchester.

In recent history, Manchester made worldwide news when an IRA bomb exploded in the city centre on June 15, 1996. It marked the largest bomb to ever be detonated in British soil, resulting in more than 200 injuries and, thankfully, no deaths. Most of the damage involved nearby buildings and other structures.

Subsequent reconstruction efforts have changed the city landscape significantly as several historic sections of the city were either demolished or modernized with glass and steel. The fully-renovated Manchester Arndale opened in September 2006 and captured the title of Europe’s biggest city centre shopping mall.

A look at how Manchester airport, with the revenues generated by car hire companies and retailers has led to development and expansion.

Manchester Airport is considered by many to be the primary Airport in the north of England. With Birmingham it is one of the two major airports that are not linked to London. As a major air destination it contains all of the hallmarks of the modern airport including car hire desks, shops and restaurants. It is similar to London’s Heathrow in the respect that it has two operational runways, a fact that puts Manchester ahead of both Gatwick and Stansted. Additionally Manchester Airport has its own link to the national rail network and also has extensive road links meaning that if travelling by bus, hire car or train access is a breeze. But what is the history of this site? How has it reached its position of primacy in terms of northern airports?

Like the majority of the airports within the UK the life of Manchester began during the nineteen thirties due to a growth in air travel generally. In its first incarnation the site was named the Ringfield Aerodrome after a nearby parish. In the latter half of the thirties the first international flight was flown from Ringfield, this flight flew to Amsterdam. However the onset of the Second World War meant that civilian uses for the airfield were soon suspended.

Requisition of the site rapidly occurred. Whilst sorties were flown from Manchester the predominant role was as a maintenance, testing and training centre. The training role was extremely important to the war effort, the new parachute regiments spent a great deal of time at Ringfield perfecting operational drops; the work of these regiments was especially important when the Normandy landings were undertaken, allowing commanders to drop troops behind enemy lines. In addition to this training role, Manchester was also used as a testing facility for the British aircraft manufacturer Avro, subsequently planes such as the Lancaster were thoroughly tested at the site.

Civilian usage however recommenced after the war. The appeal of having a major airport outside of London was soon realised. After achieving around half a million passengers a year during the fifties companies soon realised the benefits of placing car hire desks, restaurants and other retail spaces within the terminal buildings. At this time the airport was under the plenary authority of the Manchester City Council, a group that later passed control of the site over to the Manchester Airport Group. At this time the runway was lengthened in order to accommodate the larger passenger aircraft coming into circulation. Additionally the seventies saw the changing of the site’s name from Ringfield to Manchester International Airport.

The renaming saw a change in focus for the airport. Another terminal expansion with the usual services such as car hire desks, shops and restaurants occurred but the largest change was the commencement of transatlantic and transcontinental flights. Subsequently the greater range of destinations resulted in a new terminal being constructed and in the nineties the addition of a rail link truly brought the site into the modern era.

Manchester airport has evolved from a simple field in a parish near the city into one of the major elements in the UK’s air transportation network. Its position as the primary airport outside of London is assured although Birmingham and Leeds Bradford are strong contenders. Today the MAG are benefitting from the revenue generated by car hire companies and retailers and are even considering buying another major UK airport. It is through expansion and a forward thinking attitude that this has been a possibility.
